The Annual General Meeting will be followed by a talk.

Food, Famine, Fecundity and Phosphate.

Speaker: Dr. John Swan, AO

The demand for food (especially high-protein food) is growing rapidly, in step with a projected major growth in world populations. This talk will explore the linkages between the availability of land for agriculture, the growth of cities, the need for fertilizers (especially the critically important nutrient phosphate) and the parallel problem of waste treatment.

Controlled sewage disposal is essential to human health in cities, but is leading to a one-way loss of phosphate to the world's oceans. Some possible means for converting this 'positive feedback' (where the problem gets bigger and more expensive year by year) to 'negative feedback' will be examined.

Lunch: A light lunch will be provided for those who notify the Office before Thursday 7 April of their intention to attend. There is no charge for lunch but prebooking is essential for catering purposes.
